With the costs of education rising steadily, earning college credit while still in high school is a great idea. High school students wanting to get started with college work can register with Sauk Valley Community College for dual credit courses.
"High school students may take courses that count toward their high school graduation requirement while simultaneously earning college credit," explained Steve Nunez, Vice President of Academics and Student Services for SVCC. "In other words, one class fills two roles, so students earn dual credit."
The primary benefit of dual credit is the acceleration of college completion. "Most dual credit students get a jump start on completing their college credential," said Nunez. "Very motivated students may even earn their associate degree and their high school diploma simultaneously. This dual credit acceleration allows students to more quickly enter the workforce or transition to a university to earn a bachelor's degree."
While dual credit students aren't eligible for federal financial aid at SVCC, the college offers dual credit courses at reduced rates to all district high school students. "Additionally, the Sauk Valley College Foundation does allow dual credit students to apply for scholarships at SVCC," said Nunez. "It can help reduce the future cost of a college education."
Dual credit classes are similar in some ways to AP classes. "In many ways, the outcome of both types of courses is the same," added Nunez. "However, dual credit courses are most often offered by local community colleges like SVCC, are taught by faculty who are qualified to teach at the college level, and receive oversight of the course curriculum and classroom teaching methods. When the student passes the class, they receive the college credit. With AP classes, high school faculty teach the class, and then students must pass an AP qualifying exam with a high enough score in order to receive college credit."
