A slow tire leak may be difficult to detect at first, but this will eventually lead to a flat tire - and nothing is more inconvenient than being stranded on the side of the road.
The first sign of a tire leak may be from the built-in tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which will appear as a service light on your dashboard. If your car doesn’t have this system, you may notice a change in ride quality while driving.
What can you do if you suspect your tire has a leak?
Remove the tire from the vehicle and inspect it for a nail or puncture. If there isn’t any noticeable damage to the tire upon first inspection, the slow leak can be caused by a pinhole in the tread or sidewall. Common causes of a pinhole leak, nail or tire puncture is debris and road hazards such as potholes.
Mix together liquid soap with water in a spray bottle and spray the tread, sidewalls and valve system until you find the spot where the bubbles start to form. This will indicate a tire bead leak.
Additional causes of a tire leak include a leaking valve system. The valve stem on your tire is the valve that opens to allow you to fill your tires with air. The valve stem automatically seals to keep the pressure in your tires, or at least it is supposed to.
If your valve stem becomes dirty or damaged, it can cause your tires to lose air. Fortunately, this is an easy fix, and any mechanic or tire shop can replace or repair the valve stem quickly.
Over inflation, wheel alignment and problems with your vehicle’s suspension can also cause unequal tire wear and lead to a flat tire.
