The lawyers of Mertes & Mertes, P.C. have spent every day of their careers, thinking of the unthinkable and preparing for it. So when a global pandemic struck the United States, the Law Firm of Mertes & Mertes was ready for it.
In late January, 2020, the lawyers and staff of Mertes & Mertes began holding emergency meetings to prepare the law firm for the possibility of a public health crisis. “When we began preparing for this possibility, everyone thought we were nuts,” said the law firm’s managing partner, James Mertes. “But it’s our job to manage the worst case scenarios,” Mertes explained.
The law firm was already fully electronic. All of its case files were already electronically stored and managed. But by early February, the law firm arranged for every one of its attorneys and staff members to work remotely. The law firm expanded its video conferencing capabilities, and set up a “Tele-Law” service that allows clients to speak directly with attorneys and staff from the safety and comfort of their own homes. Mertes & Mertes took special measures to safeguard each of its client’s cases during an eventual shutdown. Then, the law firm spearheaded a novel approach to allow for cases to be resolved even during a court shutdown.
“We have been very proud to receive the support of several local law firms in this endeavor,” Mertes said. “Our approach will allow us to resolve cases even during the shutdown,” Mertes said. “Support for this unique approach has been overwhelming,” Mertes said. “I’m sure that the few who oppose it will jump on board when their clients see our cases moving while their cases are sitting,” he added.
So when the global pandemic struck and the shutdown occurred, Mertes & Mertes was ready. As always, it had thought of the unthinkable, and planned for it.
