Swimming Tips to Keep Your Children Safe this Summer

SPONSORED

Swimming season is here. And it’s time to make sure you’re prepared for the upcoming season. May is National Water Safety Month. The American Red Cross has the following safety tips for families:

  • Only swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards
  • Always swim with a buddy
  • Install and use barriers around your home pool
  • Keep a phone close by when using a pool or spa
  • Keep toys not in use away from pool area
  • Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions
  • Reach or throw aid to distressed swimmers – don’t go!

“Summer is a fun time of year!  Dixon is in a river community; it is very important to teach your child safety around the water. It takes only a second for a child to drown.  A child or weak swimmer could drown in the moment you take to reply to a text, check your fishing line or apply sunscreen.” says Amber Smith, Dixon YMCA Aquatics Director.   Importunately make sure your children know how to swim or proper rules around bodies of water.  At the Y, everyone needs to stay safe in and around the water. Our instructors like to make lessons fun, not fearful.

The Y offers a variety of different lessons from “Babies and Me” to advanced swim lessons. Lessons take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Because of Covid-19, lessons are currently suspended.  Get summer ready and practice water safety with swim lessons this summer.

The Y is a non-profit organization whose mission is to build a better community through enriching and engaging activities. If you’re interested in swim lessons, you can reach out to the Dixon Y at www.dixonymca.org.

We’re hiring! The Dixon Family Y is currently looking for camp counselors to help with Summer camps. Camp counselors will have daily interactions with kids while playing games, swimming, supervising weekly field trips, overseeing arts/crafts and much more. Camp counselors must be 18 by June 1. Must be available Monday through Friday from 6am-6pm. To apply please send an email to hgrobe@dixonymca.org
