How to tell when it’s time for a new car battery

Winter is a bad time to be stranded with a dead car battery.

Fortunately, there are some warning signs that may indicate your battery needs to be replaced before it’s too late.

Moore Tires Inc., offers top quality auto repair services in Mendota and batteries are quickly installed in your car at a competitive price!

Your car’s battery is vital to start your engine. It also stores energy created by the alternator and runs the secondary electrical systems such as your lights, radio, power seats, power windows and other electrical components in your car.

If your battery is failing, you mat notice the engine cranks more slowly than usual. You may begin to experience issues with your electrical components if your battery doesn’t have enough juice to power them all.

Most cars have a dashboard warning light – usually in the shape of a battery – that will illuminate to signal the battery is not being replenished properly, or if there is an issue with the battery. If the light comes on, have your vehicle’s electrical system inspected by a certified team of mechanics at Moore Tires.

On average, a car battery lasts 4-5 years. That lifespan will fluctuate depending on extreme temperature exposure and other factors, but once you reach the 4-year mark, you should have your battery tested by a professional.

A swollen battery case or an odd smell can also be signs that it’s time for a new battery. When a car battery is exposed to excessive amounts of heat or cold, the sides of the battery case may swell.

Batteries are rechargeable and it’s a good idea to carry jumper cables in your vehicle in case of unexpected emergencies. You may need to jump start your vehicle or help another driver in need!
