LOCAL ROUNDUP: Sterling tennis beats Freeport, Newman

The Sterling tennis team won a pair of matches Saturday, beating Newman 4-1 and Freeport 3-2.

In the win over the Comets, Irene Hilty won the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Newman's Lilliana Campbell. In doubles play, Sterling got wins from Amy Ziegler and Olivia Pitkin beating Brynlee Hermeyer and Madelyn Verdick 6-2, 6-4, Jenica Francis and Sam Feather beat Cecilia Sagel and Marisel Schalck 7-5, 6-0 and Madison Hubbs and Victoria Stutzke beat Fernanda Reyes and Sophia Propheter 6-1, 6-2.

Newman got its win from No. 1 singles player Sarah Tunink, who beat Anna Meltzer 6-4, 7-6 (4).

In the win over Freeport, Sterling got a 6-2, 6-1 doubles win from Francis and Feather, as well as a 6-3, 6-1 singles win from McKenzie Hubbard and a 6-4, 6-3 singles win from Kaylee Martinez.

Freeport beat Newman 4-1. The Comets' lone win came from Hermeyer and Verdick, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.


Sterling 11th at Freeport: The Golden Warriors scored a 480 to place 11th at the Pretzel Invitational. Boylan shot a 411 to win the event by 17 strokes over Guilford.

Carter Schlegel led Sterling with an 88. Boylan's Cooper Watt was the individual medalist with a 74.

Sterling got 98s from Nate Ottens, Dale Guerreri and Cam O'Brien.


Orion 17, Newman 52, Bureau Valley 64: The Chargers had the top four runners in a Three Rivers Conference triangular in Manlius.

Newman's Claire Crisham took fifth in 22:57 with teammate Gianna Widolff taking sixth in 23:55.

Jillian Hulsing led the Storm with a ninth-place run in 26:19. Paige Wagner took 11th in 26:24.


Newman 19, Orion 57, Bureau Valley 63: The Comets had four of the top five runners in Manlius.

Lucas Simpson won in 17:57, Ken Boesen took second in 18:02, Jon Craft was fourth in 18:26 and Landen Summers was fifth in 18:30.

Bureau Valley's Elijah House took third in 18:05. Isaac Attig was 12th and Ben Roth 13th.
