Reagan's namesake, patrolling the South China Sea with Nimitz, nearing a 17th anniversary
SOUTH CHINA SEA – An F/A-18E Super Hornet flies over the flight deck of the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan on Saturday. Ronald Reagan is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5. The Nimitz and Ronald Reagan CSGs are conducting dual-carrier operations as the Nimitz Carrier Strike Force. The Ronald Reagan was christened in March 2001 and commissioned nearly 17 years ago, on July 12, 2003 at Naval Station Norfolk. It was was the first nuclear-powered warship of any kind, and the first aircraft carrier to be named in honor of a living former president.
