STERLING – The Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Steak Fry in the Country, a Sauk Valley staple for more than 35 years, is doing without the steak this year.
Because of the uncertainty brought about by COVID-19, the chamber's Agribusiness Committee is canceling the annual dinner, which usually draws nearly 300 participants, and instead will be seeking donations from local businesses and community members by offering sponsorship packages at various levels.
These sponsorship levels will include advertising opportunities, desserts, wine, and local restaurant gift certificates.
As always, proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to local high school students to pursue higher education in an ag-related field.
This year, seven students were awarded $9,000 in scholarships.
Money also will be used to support ag education through donations to University of Illinois Extension 4-H program, Whiteside County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom, and local FFA programs.
