The Dixon boys track & field team took top honors at the Gold Medal Meet on Saturday at Westwood Sports Complex in Sterling, amassing 159 points to beat runner-up Geneseo by 37.
Rock Falls was third (89), host Sterling finished fourth (33), and Oregon placed fifth (17).
The Dukes notched wins in six events and took second in three more. Thomas Sitter won the 400 (58.53 seconds), Cayden Grafton took the 800 (2:10.20), Jacob Gusse won the triple jump (12.21 meters), and Dre Jackson took the shot put (13.98 meters). Dixon also won the 4x400 relay in 3:41.61 (Kade Frey, Gusse, Jericho Kirby, Brayden Bock) and the 4x800 in 8:35.67 (Bock, Isiah Kuehl, Jack Johnson, Sitter). Ethan Fox was second in the 60 dash (7.27), Christian Seagren took second in the 1,600 (4:41.65), and Frey, Fox, Kirby and Gusse were second in the 4x200 (1:37.18).
Rock Falls had five wins and three runner-up finishes. Elijah Johnson won the 60 dash (7.10 seconds), Dawson Smith took the 1,600 (4:30.49), Matthew Marcum won the 60 hurdles (9.22), and Adrian Ibarra took the long jump (6.11 meters). Johnson, Ibarra, Matthew McGrady and Marcum won the 4x200 in 1:36.94. McGrady also was second in the 200 (24.92), Alan Carter took second in the 60 hurdles (9.74), and Devon Parker, Carter, Marcum and Booker Cross were second in the 4x400 (3:43.92).
Sterling’s lone top-two finish came from Jahshawn Howard, who took second in the long jump (6.01 meters). Oregon’s top finish was a second place by Daniel Dominguez in the shot put (13.12 meters).
Girls indoor track & field
Warriors 2nd at Westwood: The Sterling girls track team earned a runner-up finish at the Gold Medal Meet on Saturday at Westwood, scoring 75 points to take second behind Geneseo (147).
Oregon took third (66), Dixon placed fourth (62), and Rock Falls finished fifth (47).
While they didn’t win an event, the Golden Warriors took second in four of them: Kylie Nicklaus in the 800 (2:30.09), Katelyn Trobaugh in the 60 hurdles (9.33 seconds), Alice Sotelo on the triple jump (9.22 meters), and the quartet of Trobaugh, Hannah Mobarak, Lillian Peavy and Nicklaus in the 4x400 relay (4:31.60).
Oregon got wins from Cynthia Nyderek in the triple jump (9.99 meters), Brenna Noon in the shot put (11.46 meters), and the 4x400 team of Lyndi Kenney, Breanna DeHaan, Hadley Lutz and Nyderek (4:27.99). Nyderek also took second in the long jump (4.7 meters), and the Hawks were runners-up in the 4x200 (1:55.19) with the team of Ava Wight, Jadyn Bothe, Lutz and Kenney.
Dixon’s Jade Miller won the 1,600 (5:30.57), and the Duchesses’ quartet of Tara Schielein, Abby Goff, Faith Snyder and Emma Evans won the 4x200 (1:53.95). Schielein also took second in the 60 dash (8.32 seconds) and the 200 (28.55), and Mackenzie Welch was runner-up in the shot put (10.58 meters).
Rock Falls’ Erin Porter won the 800 (2:28.94), and she also teamed with Bailee Fortney, Bryahna Ganther and Alex Gomez to win the 4x800 (10:18.02).
