GIRLS BASKETBALL

Quartet earns all-state honors

Eastland senior Erin Henze was a first-team selection on the Class 1A AP All-State Team, and one of four local players named to the squad, released Thursday.

Henze was joined by Cougar classmate Lydia Coatney and Amboy junior Abi Payne as second-team selections, and Clippers junior Mallory Powers as an honorable mention pick.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Skyhawks win Region IV opener

The Sauk Valley men's basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Malcolm X 50-46 in the quarterfinals of the Region IV Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Joliet.

Beau Bailey hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and three steals for the Skyhawks (21-10), who trailed 29-23 at the break. Markel Hudson had 11 points and eight rebounds for Sauk, while Derian Duncan added eight points and eight assists. The Skyhawks will face Triton in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Saturday in Joliet.

Also on Thursday, SVCC announced that men's player Andrew Morrissey and women's players Shian Galbreath and Noelle Jones were named to the All-Region team.

LOCAL TENNIS

Coffee mixed in with tennis in Sterling

Westwood Sports Complex in Sterling is hosting an event called Caffeinated Courts this afternoon and Saturday morning at the tennis complex.

Sally Sue's Coffee will provide free coffee on site during the event, which takes place from 4-7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The event is free for anyone wishing to attend. Westwood will provide tennis racquets and balls for anyone who wants to play.
