STERLING – Russell L. “Russ” Lifka, 66, of Sterling, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at his home, surrounded by family.

Russ was born in Sterling on February 14, 1954, the son of William and Bernadine (Harris) Lifka. He owned and operated Lifka’s Gardens for many years. Russ regularly donated from “the garden” to several churches and not-for-profit organizations in the area. In the winter months, Russ was making candy, and delivering his peanut brittle and toffee everywhere he went. He also enjoyed spending time with friends at the garden, riding his Harley, camping at Larry’s Pondarosa in Lyndon, and Cordova drag races.

Survivors include his mother, Bernadine of Sterling; spouse, Vicky Simmons of Rock Falls; four daughters, Audra (Kevin Tolan) Lifka of California, Crystal (Matthew) Smith of Dixon, Lacy Lifka of Machesney Park, and Tara (Roger Wolber) Lifka of Dixon; one son, Jamie (Danielle) Simmons of Warrenville; one brother, Larry (Dora) Lifka of Rock Falls; one sister, Shelley (Gary Anderson) Lifka of Sterling; and six grandchildren, Tyler Nicole, Dean, Colten, Thalia, Mason, and Brandon.

Russ was preceded in death by his father; and one son, Jeremy Simmons.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020, at The Palms in Sterling. “My friends are the best friends, loyal, willing, and able. Now let’s get to drinking! All glasses off the table!”

Special thanks to Rock River Hospice & Home, along with their staff Stacey, Jessica, Laurie, and Linda for their exceptional care.
