Winter storm coming

A winter storm is slated to hit the area Friday night into late Saturday, creating hazardous conditions for travelers.

Rain on Friday will change to freezing rain and sleet during the night for most of northwest Illinois as colder air gets pulled south, according to the National Weather Service.

That will likely bring 0.1 to 0.3 inches of ice with the wintry mix, which will become steady snowfall Saturday morning into the night, easing up around midnight.

Snow could total 3 to 5 inches during the day followed by 1 to 3 more inches at night, with blustery wind gusts.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch effective from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday, and the agency warns that travel could be very difficult with possible ice and later drifting snow.

Saturday's high will be around 29 degrees with a low of 14. Sunday will be partly cloudy with a high near 28.

A 40 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. North wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Friday night

Rain, snow, and sleet before 2 a.m., then sleet, possibly mixed with snow. Low around 26. Blustery, with a north wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of around 2 inches.

Sleet, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all snow after 7 a.m. High near 29. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of around 2 inches.
