County raises dog vaccination fees

DIXON – The cost of rabies vaccinations for dogs will go up next month in Lee County, with increases ranging from $3 to $18.

The County Board recently signed off on fee hikes with the cost for a 1-year vaccination being $18 for spayed or neutered dogs or $36 for those that aren’t. The 3-year vaccination would cost $38 and $76, respectively.

In July, proposed increases were $3 across the board, but they were revised so that the fee would be double for unaltered dogs, to encourage pet owners to get their dogs fixed.

The increases take effect Sept. 1, and will pay to change an animal control position from part time to full time to account for current and anticipated workload increases.

Earlier this month, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 131 requiring cats 4 months or older to get a rabies vaccine, but it doesn’t include feral cats unless they are being spayed or neutered.

The new law goes takes effect Jan. 1. Board Chairman John Nicholson said the fees for cats have not yet been determined.

Starting Sept. 1, rabies vaccination fees for dogs will be going up in Lee County.
