County may allow weddings on the Old Courthouse lawn

DIXON – The county is considering drafting guidelines and an application for couples wanting to get married on the Old Lee County Courthouse lawn.

People using the Post House Ballroom across the street for wedding receptions have asked about getting married on the courthouse lawn with the ornate, historic building in the background, County Administrator Theresa Wittenauer said.

The stately building at 112 E. Second St. dates back nearly 120 years, to 1901.

It’s a public space and shouldn’t be a problem for small weddings, but Wittenauer told County Board members that they’ll likely want to put general guidelines together and look at putting an application online for those interested.

It’s a beautiful building, and it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for people to take advantage of, Board Chairman John Nicholson said.

The county’s insurance would cover those types of events, so liability shouldn’t be a concern, Wittenauer said.

Talks are in early stages, but there likely wouldn’t be a fee to use the grounds.
