Rock Falls’ Johnson
to play at Doane
Rock Falls senior Bree Johnson will continue her athletic and academic career at Doane University.
Johnson was a key role player on a Rockets squad that went 26-9 and reached the Sweet 16 in Class 3A this past season.
Doane, which is located in Crete, Nebraska, competes in NAIA’s Great Plains Athletic Conference.

E-P’s Kruthoff to
vault at DuPage
Erie-Prophetstown track and field athlete Kyle Kruthoff will continue his athletic and academic career at the College of DuPage.
Kruthoff won the Class 1A pole vault title at last spring’s state meet in Charleston when he cleared 15 feet, 6 inches. He was seventh as a sophomore in Class 2A, when he cleared 14-0.
Earlier this spring, Kruthoff won the Illinois Top Times indoor state meet in Bloomington with a vault of 15-6.
Sterling’s O’Brien to throw at Augustana
Sterling senior Josh O’Brien will continue his
athletic and academic career at Augustana College.
O’Brien finished fourth in the area in the shot put with a top toss of 45-7 1/2 during the 2019 indoor season. He is currently fourth in the area in the discus (139-0 1/2), and has thrown 39-3 3/4 in the shot put in the outdoor season.
Dixon’s Nelson to play at St. Ambrose
Dixon senior Hallie Nelson will continue her athletic and academic career at St. Ambrose next fall.
Nelson has been part of a Dixon program that has won four straight Big Northern titles, and is 50-9 in the last three seasons. She will also be reunited with current classmate Madalin Blumhoff and former Dixon teammate Katie Provo at St. Ambrose.
The Fighting Bees went 13-5 overall and 7-3 in NAIA’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference last season.
Waltrip stepping away from broadcast booth
Fox Sports NASCAR analyst Darrell Waltrip has announced that he will retire at the end of the network’s broadcast season.
Waltrip was a member of the Fox Sports NASCAR team when it first went on the air in 2001, when he helped call the Daytona 500 that was won by his brother Michael, but is mostly remembered for the last-lap accident that took the life of Dale Earnhardt.
Waltrip’s last broadcast will be during the NASCAR Cup event at Sonoma Raceway on June 23.
Houston, Sampson reach agreement on contract extension
The University of Houston and Kelvin Sampson have reached agreement on a 6-year contract extension, the two sides announced Thursday.
Kellen Sampson, Kelvin’s son, also was named head coach-in-waiting as part of a succession plan when Kelvin Sampson retires.
The deal is pending approval by the University of Houston System Board of Regents.
