Two Dukes announce college plans

Dixon football players Finn Brandon and Dylan Messer announced Thursday their plans to play college football.

Brandon, a senior wide receiver and linebacker, will play at St. Xavier.

Messer, a senior lineman, will play at Augustana

St. Xavier went 9-4 last season, going 5-0 in the Midwest League and reaching the NAIA quarterfinals.

Augustana was 4-6 last year, 3-6 in the CCIW.


Goldschmidt, Cards near extension

The Cardinals and Paul Goldschmidt are finalizing a 5-year extension worth around $130 million, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

The extension, to start after 2019, carries through 2024.

Rays sign Snell to
new 5-year deal

AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell will go into his first career opening-day start with a lot more financial security than he envisioned just a few days ago.

The 26-year-old left-hander said Thursday he was almost certain he wouldn’t receive the raise he felt he deserved until he hit arbitration next winter, but he and the Rays agreed to a $50 million, 5-year contract.
