U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, talks with Kevin Mullen, president and general manager of Sterling Steel Co., during a tour of the factory. Bustos stopped in Sterling and Moline Wednesday as part of her “Protecting your Pocketbook” tour, focusing on the importance of investments in American infrastructure and manufacturing jobs. Bustos has introduced the Buy America for Drinking Water Extension Act, which would require drinking water infrastructure projects to buy American steel and support U.S. workers. Sterling Steel melts steel for wire rods and provides them to its sister companies nationwide. With 280 employees, it is one of the largest recyclers in the state, melting up to 600,000 tons of scrap steel a year in one of the biggest electric furnaces in the world, Bustos said in a news release.
