ROCK FALLS – Just a few months after the land was purchased, a new business is open at 1805 Industrial Park Road.
A-Plus Mini Storage officially made its rental space available Tuesday, 3 months after owner Phillip McDermott bought 3 acres of land at the site.
McDermott, a Freeport resident, is also co-owner of Vapor City at 1201 First Ave. in Rock Falls. He runs the storage business by himself.
He said he will give A-Plus some time to take root, and then assess expansion possibilities.
“I started with 30 storage units, but I do have space here to grow,” McDermott said. “I should have a pretty good idea after the first year.”
The units are large enough to accommodate vehicles and boats, as well as household items.
McDermott said that after spending some time in Rock Falls, the city seemed like a good fit for his business aspirations.
“I like the area a lot, and I saw a need for Vapor City, and just decided to give it a shot,” he said. “The city has been cooperative – it’s been a good place to do business.”
On Tuesday, a public hearing was held at the Rock Falls Planning and Zoning Commission meeting for McDermott’s variance request for front, back, and side building setbacks.
The commissioners recommended the approval of the request, and it will be moved to the council for its consideration.
“If approved, the variance would allow the owner to better utilize the available land for his storage units,” Building Inspector Mark Searing said.
