Girls basketball: SVM previews 2015 1A/2A regionals

2A Fulton

When: Monday, Tuesday,

Where: Fulton High School

Teams: No. 1 Morrison (13-12), No. 2 Bureau Valley (14-12), No. 3 Fulton (12-14), No. 4 Oregon (11-16), No. 5 Newman (7-16), No. 6 West Carroll

Players to watch: Lakin Goodman, Morrison sr. G; Ashley Greul, Morrison sr. C; Hayley Guilinger, West Carroll so. G; Darcy Kepner, Bureau Valley jr. G; Averi Leitzen, Fulton jr. G; Kelsey Pudlas, Oregon sr. F; Aubree Schmitt, Newman sr. G; Kelsey Simpson, Newman so. G; Anni Wilson, Oregon jr. G

Outlook: This regional is as balanced as it gets, with probably five of the six teams with realistic chances of winning the title. Newman, for instance, picked up a win over Bureau Valley on Tuesday, and lost by a point to a good Kewanee team the next night. Morrison has the most experience, and most consistent scorer in Goodman.

Favorite: Morrison

Darkhorse: Newman

Winner to: Hall Sectional vs.
Ottawa Marquette Regional winner, 7 p.m. Feb. 17

SVM prediction: Bureau Valley

1A Indian Creek

When: Monday, Tuesday,

Where: Indian Creek High School, Shabbona

Teams: No. 1 Amboy (24-1), No. 2 Indian Creek (20-7), No. 3 LaMoille-Ohio (9-15), No. 4 Earlville (8-13), No. 5 Paw Paw (2-11)

Players to watch: Josie Diehl, Indian Creek jr. F; Elizabeth Guenther, LaMoille-Ohio sr. F; Lexi Loftus, LaMoille-Ohio fr. G; Joslyn Hopkins, Paw Paw fr. PG; Kaitlyn Liebing, Amboy sr. F; Alexis Maxwell sr. F; Zoie Reed, Earlville sr. G; Delaney Wilhelm, Amboy so. G; Makayli Vann, Indian Creek fr. F

Outlook: The Clippers have a win over each of the teams at the regional during the regular season. It would take a lot for it not to be an Amboy vs. Indian Creek championship game. The two teams met at the Amboy Holiday tournament, with the Clippers winning 50-24. Indian Creek forward Josie Diehl played limited minutes in that game because of issues with asthma.

Favorite: Amboy

Darkhorse: Indian Creek

Winner to: Roanoke-Benson
Sectional vs. Somonauk Regional winner, 7 p.m. Feb. 17

SVM prediction: Amboy

1A Polo

When: Monday, Wednesday,

Where: Polo High School

Teams: No. 1 Prophetstown (25-3), No. 2 AFC (21-3), No. 3 Eastland (20-6), No. 4 Erie (17-11), No. 5 Polo (8-15), No. 6 Milledgeville (8-16)

Players to watch: Jenna Bibler, Milledgeville jr. G; Rachel Cobert, Erie jr. F: Bubby Doubler, Eastland jr. G: Alisyn Essex, AFC sr. F: Clare Kramer, Prophetstown sr. F; Lexis Macomber, Eastland sr. F; KeeLey Meyer, Polo sr. F; Allison Prestegaard, AFC sr. F; Corrie Reiley, Prophetstown sr. G; Delaney Tegeler, Erie jr. F

Outlook: There are four teams at this regional that possibly could win titles at the other three regionals in this sectional. Prophetstown has been ranked No. 1 in 1A all season in the AP Poll after finishing second
in 2A in 2013. AFC has a lot of height that could be a matchup issue for the Prophets. Never count out Eastland, which finished third at the state tournament last year.

Favorite: Prophetstown

Darkhorse: AFC

Winner to: Pecatonica Sectional vs. Dakota Regional winner, 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16.

SVM prediction: Prophetstown
