A new school year is approaching, and students may already be anticipating what the academic year will bring. At Sauk Valley Community College, staff and faculty work hard to help students acclimate to the college setting and achieve academic success.
"Our students are quite diverse in their demographics and goals, so it's important that we support them as much as possible, especially during their first semester as a new student," explained Steve Nunez, Vice President of Academics and Student Services. "New students are first oriented to SVCC through a mandatory New Student Orientation. They also take a First Year Experience course that exposes them to financial and study strategies, and to resources like free tutoring, proactive advising, and computer labs." SVCC is focused on engaging students with Welcome Tables during their first week, and later in the semester with Student Success Week.
"Students shouldn't be afraid to ask for help if they're struggling," added Nunez. "At Sauk, we're very student-centered and want to help students achieve their goals. They're faced with a rigorous academic setting at Sauk, so if they need assistance, their professors and academic advisors are available to guide them through the semester."
Nunez advises students to get involved at Sauk by joining clubs and organizations to help them meet new friends and expand their horizons. "College is challenging, but it's important to have fun, too," he said.
Sauk also hosts "Sauk Fest", where students, faculty and staff receive a free lunch and students can visit a variety of booths to learn more about community and Sauk organizations. "This is one of my favorite events of the year, as our hallways are filled with students, staff, and faculty," said Nunez. "I'd also like to emphasize that Sauk is a great place for students who have an undecided major. We do a great job helping students determine their next academic steps."
