Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) starts November 1st and runs through December 15th.   Marketplace offers private health insurance and financial assistance to help purchase your healthcare. Certified ACA Navigators are available at the Health Department to assist the community with enrollment into the Marketplace insurance plans. Medicaid enrollment is open all year long and Navigators are available to assist throughout the year.

Cory Law, certified application counselor for ACA enrollment, assures that despite attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act in Washington, D.C. “The program is not going anywhere anytime soon. We want to reassure everybody that as long as the program is going on we're here to help.”

Application counselors are available at the health department from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or later by appointment.  Walk-ins are welcome, but Melissa Spangler, certified application counselor for ACA suggests making an appointment to avoid waiting.

Counselors are also available offsite at the following locations, by appointment only:

  • Mondays, 5 to 7 p.m. at Sterling Public Central Library
  • Wednesdays, 5 to 7 p.m. at  Odell Public Central Library, Morrison
  • Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Lee County Health Department, Dixon
  • Thursdays, 5 to 7 p.m. at  Dixon Public Central Library

More than 356,000 Illinoisans carry health insurance through the Marketplace. More than 650,000 are enrolled in Medicaid through the ACA.  In 2017 the state average premium was $230 and is expected to rise slightly in 2018.  Many people receive subsidies to offset the cost of the premium.  “So it’s very possible that you might find a great deal,” says Law.
