At the request of Gov. Pat Quinn, I, along with state Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, arrived at Thomson prison on Monday to find a daunting number of reporters, heads of local municipalities, law enforcement officials, and others with a need to know more about the proposed plan to sell the prison to the federal government.

This is a reply to Kate Knowles’ letter about bear hunting on Oct. 31 titled “Sad that ‘gorgeous’ bear was hunted, killed.”

I would just like to say thanks to the city employees in regard to the road work they have been finishing in our East Ninth Street neighborhood in Sterling.

In the shadow of Veterans Day, we are reminded, once again, of the ideals of freedom, sacrifice and liberation as well as America’s influence in the world, both past and present. To truly take the time to ponder what all that really means is both enlightening as well as humbling.

I want to extend my thanks to all who joined us for our community’s Veterans Day ceremony. I was informed by several citizens that the turnout at Veterans Memorial Park was potentially the largest we have had in some time.

November is Home Care and Hospice Month in Illinois, a time to honor and thank home health nurses, aides, therapists, social workers and other home care staff who are always there for us whenever we or our loved ones need home care and hospice.

I would like to join Julie Gordon in her request to ban leaf burning in Rock Falls.

It was a cool, nice service for veterans in Rock Falls. I looked for younger children and parents. A few were there, but out of our whole city, we couldn’t get a crowd?

I just learned that our Waldenbooks store at the mall is closing soon. The parent company, Borders, is responsible for this action.

This is in reply to those who have written in support of a burn ban in Rock Falls, specifically Eddy Lilly in his letter on Nov. 12 titled “Stop leaf burning (cough, cough).” 

“Give me a tin can, and I will go door to door to collect money for Self Help.”

In the past, I’ve helped others out in a variety of ways, but Saturday night, Nov. 7, must have been payback day for me (at least 10- or 100-fold.)

I wanted to commend the newspaper for featuring many of our local veterans and their personal stories.
