Permitting for city building projects will be required

ROCK FALLS – All Rock Falls city building projects soon may go through the same process as all others to ensure compliance with city code.

The City Council, on first reading, unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday night to require building permits for city projects.

Ward 4 Alderman Lee Folsom was absent.

Rock Falls City Administrator Robbin Blackert said the ordinance was drawn up, in part, because the building department did not see the plans for the Fairview Lift Station project.

“We wanted to ensure that none of the processes, in the permit process, such as the building department getting copies of the buildings plans, etc., were missed for city projects,” she said. “So we’re going to follow our own guidelines for permitting, to ensure that those steps all happen on our own city projects.”

The city won’t pay for the permitting process like residents must, though.

The council also approved an amendment to the city’s purchasing procedures manual, which Blackert said added language and didn’t alter policy.

The amendment added that prevailing wage language must be added to all bids and that performance bonds are included for any contract purchases more than $5,000.

Rock Falls’ public information network was up and running during the July 16 meeting, and residents were able to watch the City Council meeting on Channel 5. Upgrades to the system were completed Tuesday afternoon, Blackert said.
