Barney’s bat boosts Cubs

Created: Tuesday, April 23, 2013 11:40 p.m. CDT

Carlos Marmol blew a lead in the ninth inning before Darwin Barney hit his first homer in the 10th inning Tuesday night, lifting the Cubs to a 4-2 victory over the Reds in Cincinnati.

Chicago ended its four-game losing streak after blowing a late lead for the second straight day. The Cubs let a two-run lead get away in the 13th inning of a 5-4 loss Monday night.

Barney connected off left-hander Manny Parra (0-1), and Dave Sappelt added an RBI single.

Marmol (2-1), who lost the closer's job, came on with a runner on second and one out in the ninth to face Joey Votto, who was 1 for 15 in his career off the reliever with nine strikeouts. Votto singled up the middle to tie it.

Cardinals 2, Nationals 0: Adam Wainwright extended his sterling start to the season – and Washington's mediocre one – by coming within two outs of his second shutout, leading the Cardinals past the Nationals in Washington.

The right-hander (4-1) lowered his ERA to 1.93 by going 8 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only five hits. Edward Mujica got the final two outs for his third save.

Allen Craig and Carlos Beltran drove in runs in the fourth off Nationals lefty Ross Detwiler (1-1), who gave up eight hits across six innings.

The Nationals, who led the majors with 98 wins last season, lost for the eighth time in their past 11 games to fall to 10-10.

Indians at White Sox, ppd.: Rain postponed Tuesday night's game between Cleveland and the White Sox in Chicago.

The game was called 3 hours, 35 minutes before the scheduled first pitch, the second postponement for Chicago during an eight-game homestand.

Tuesday's scheduled starters, Zach McAllister for Cleveland and Jose Quintana for Chicago, will start today.
