STERLING – The synthetic turf field at Roscoe Eades Stadium will have a new familiar name: Sterling Chevrolet Field.

The School Board on Wednesday unanimously approved a 5-year, almost $250,000 contract with Sterling Chevrolet for exclusive naming rights to the high school football field.

The field will be called Sterling Chevrolet Field, but more commonly referred to as Sterling Chevrolet Field at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Board member Gail Dancey said a few residents expressed concern that the Roscoe Eades name would fade away with the introduction of the Sterling Chevrolet brand.

Superintendent Tad Everett said the district will not let that happen.

“Sterling is a community of strong tradition, and we want to respect that and those individuals,” he said.

The contract, effective July 1, gives Sterling Chevrolet exclusive naming rights to the field for $240,000, which the company will pay in $10,000 monthly installments over the first 2 years of the contract.

Jim Spencer, executive director of Sterling Schools Foundation, said the revenue essentially will pay off the remainder of the $1.2 million loan to install the turf and allow the foundation to begin saving money to maintain it.

The contract prohibits other automobile companies or dealerships from advertising in the stadium, even during events hosted by entities not affiliated with the district.

Board member Bob Allen asked whether that was applicable to the Newman Central Catholic High School football games, which already are booked for the field.

Everett said the contract will be amended to clarify whether the clause applies only to new renters of the field. Newman is the only existing renter.

The contract does not include the naming rights to other athletic facilities – DuWayne Dietz Track, Roscoe Eades Stadium and Homer Musgrove Fieldhouse – or to Centennial Auditorium.

Sterling Chevrolet has the option to renew the contract in 2018.
