DEFAMATION LAWSUIT: Former Dixon School District varsity boys basketball coach and athletic director Steve Sandholm filed a defamation lawsuit in March 2008 against nine players’ parents; NRG Media, parent company of local radio station WIXN; and the station’s general manager. It was dismissed July 2009, and reinstated in January by the state Supreme Court. 

On the docket: Conference call, in which a Lee County judge will rule on dismissal of the suit.

THEFT CASE: Jackie G. Ferguson, 35, of Tampico; charged with theft and damage to property. Police say Ferguson had copper wiring stolen from a Sterling business in August.

SEX ASSAULT CASE: Richard M. Fonder, 26, of Sterling; charged with criminal sexual assault. Police say a 20-year-old woman told them Nov. 25 that Fonder assaulted her during a party. 

On the docket: Pretrial conference.

IDENTITY THEFT CASE: Magan J. Fuller, 39, of Sterling; charged with aggravated identity theft. Police say Fuller used personal information from a man older than 60 in order to get utility services in August 2011. 

On the docket: Pretrial conference.

THEFT CASE: Steven K. Argraves, 40, of Sterling; charged with burglary. Police say Argraves and another person stole scrap metal from a rural Sterling business in January and sold it.

On the docket: Pretrial conference.  

TRESPASS TO A RESIDENCE CASE: Dealon J. Gonzales, 34, of Rock Falls; charged with criminal trespass to a residence and misdemeanor charges of criminal damage to property and theft of less than $500.

Police say Gonzales kicked his way into a Sterling home on Sept. 16 and stole a cellphone and debit card.

SEX ABUSE CASE: Brent A. Grove, 28, of Sterling; charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. Police say Grove sexually abused two children younger than 13 in May and June. 

On the docket: Pretrial conference. 

FORGERY CASE: Iowans Jimmie D. Martin, 40, of Bettendorf, and Jeffrey K. Morris, 46, of Davenport; charged with six counts each of burglary and forgery. Co-defendant Vauncile M. Ruby, 46, of Davenport, is charged with five counts each of burglary and forgery and one count of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Police say the three were passing counterfeit $20 bills at various stores in Sterling in January.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY/TRESPASSING CASE: Erik J. Morales, 28, of Sterling; charged with criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to a residence. Police say Morales, who was intoxicated, mistakenly broke into a Sterling home in the 100 block of East Eighth Street on Dec. 4, 2011.

On the docket: Pretrial conference.

THEFT CASE: Troy J. Morgan, 31, of Sterling; charged with six counts of felony theft and two counts of misdemeanor theft. Police say a raid of Morgan’s home in January turned up numerous scrap items reported stolen.

RAPE/HOME INVASION CASE: David J. Reese, 27, of Rock Falls; charged with home invasion, armed robbery, and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Police say Reese pushed his way into a Rock Falls woman’s home on May 31 and demanded money before raping her. 

On the docket: Pretrial conference. 

BURGLARY CASE: Stephen M. Sato, 33, of Chicago; charged with two counts of burglary. Police say Sato and another person burglarized Dollar General stores in Fulton and Morrison in December and January. 

On the docket: Pretrial conference.

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE: Lawrence C. Verdick Jr., 59, of Sterling; charged with 38 counts of aggravated child pornography. A search of his home computer, which was seized in April 2011, turned up many sexually explicit images of children younger than 12, according to Whiteside County sheriff’s deputies.

HOME INVASION CASE: Thomas R. Harrold, 27, of Rock Falls, charged with home invasion, criminal trespass to state-supported land, and domestic battery.

Police say Harrold entered a woman’s home without her permission and battered her.

UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF FIREARM CASE: Guillermo Santos Swearinger, 26, of Sterling; charged with domestic battery, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and possession of a firearm without a FOID card.

Police say Swearinger, a convicted felon, battered a relative, then hid a .22-caliber rifle inside a coat and put it in a car that took it to another house.
