Sterling baseball wins in eight innings in Rochelle
The Sterling baseball team spun the carousel to the tune of three runs in the top of the eighth to win 6-3 in eight innings Wednesday in Rochelle.
With one out in the 3-3 game, Frankie Perino singled, Brandon Dennis beat out an infield single, and a passed ball brought in a run. After catcher David Gottemoller drove in another run with a single, another passed ball plated Dennis and gave Sterling (4-2) a three-run cushion.
Tanner Morse (2-1) worked the first seven innings to get the win, striking out 11, walking none and scattering five hits. Caleb Francque allowed just one hit in the bottom of the eighth to get his second save.
Logan Rippy had two hits and an RBI for
Sterling. Rochelle (0-4) scored all its runs on two homers.
Rockford Lutheran 4, Amboy 3: The Clippers couldn’t make a 3-1 lead through three innings stand up in a nonconference game in Amboy.
Tyson Powers hit a two-run home run to give Amboy (4-2) a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, and Drew Fordham doubled home Bailey Appleman for a two-run lead.
But two of the Crusaders’ last three runs were unearned, and Chuck Deininger (0-1) took the loss in relief. Giorgi Arbisi went six innings and got the win for Lutheran (4-2).
Bureau Valley 11, LaMoille 1, 5 inn.: McKinley Kruger and Keaton Wagenknecht each drove in three runs as the Storm picked up a run-rule
victory over the Lions in Manlius.
Pearl City 4, AFC 2: Troy Mairs got the Raiders into the sixth inning tied 2-2 but couldn’t record an out in the frame in a nonconference game in Ashton.
Mairs allowed six hits in the five-plus innings, striking out four and walking three. He was charged with all four runs – three of them earned, as the Wolves scored twice in the sixth.
AFC (0-1) got a scoreless inning of relief and and an RBI from senior Tyler Shugars.
Rockford Christian 2, Polo-Forreston 0: The Royal Lions broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a win in Forreston.
Ethan Groom allowed just one hit over five innings for the Cardinals. Jonah Drake took the loss.
Orangeville 4, West Carroll 3: The Broncos scored single runs in each of the last three innings to pull out a win over the visiting Thunder.
Nick Hughes went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases for West Carroll (1-1).
Rock Falls 12, Freeport
4: Jordan Giddings
doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs as the Rockets topped the
Pretzels in Freeport.
Giddings also tossed three innings in relief of Julie Dodd, who got the win for Rock Falls (5-0).
Bureau Valley 18, LaMoille-Ohio 1, 4 inn.:
Phillips legged out two triples and drove in four runs in a nonconference game in Manlius.
Irini Petros worked three innings to get the win, striking out three and walking three while allowing the lone run. Darcy Kepner got to pitch to Dana Kepner in a scoreless inning of relief for the Storm (1-0).
Polo-Forreston 18, West Carroll 8: Ashley Long drove in four runs and was also the winning pitcher as the Cardinals beat the Thunder in Thomson.
Also for Polo-Forreston, Abby Peterson collected four hits, while Long and Meg Cullor had three apiece.
Allison Thulen doubled, singled twice and had four RBIs for West Carroll.
Pecatonica 5, AFC 4: Cassidy Koning allowed just one earned run in eight innings for the Raiders in a home loss to the Indians.
Koning doubled, singled and drove in two runs for AFC (0-1).
Freeport 3, Sterling 2: The Warriors (0-3) are still seeking their first win after a narrow home loss to the Pretzels.
Chandler Allen won at No. 2 singles, while Jacob Reynolds and Jack Nitz won at No. 3 doubles to account for Sterling’s scoring.
Rock Valley 5, Sauk Valley 4: For the second time this week, the Skyhawks split the singles matches. But whereas they were swept in doubles by Lake County on Monday, they took the No. 1 match against Rock Valley.
Caleb Bradley won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) over John Rolando, and P.J. Ginn beat Reed Ortland 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Then the Skyhawks paired to beat Ortland and Ty Kotlenthony 6-3, 6-2.
Granit Tefiku won the No. 3 singles match over Kotlenthony 6-2, 6-3.
