Newly wed alderwoman stepping down
STERLING – She's married a Rock Falls man and is moving into his house, so Sterling alderwoman-at-large Linda Marley is stepping down from the council, she said Tuesday.
Now Linda Pennell, the 63-year-old got engaged on Valentine's Day; she and Dennis Pennell, 57, married on Feb. 22.
"I'm going to be moving this week to a nice home in Rock Falls. I would like to get involved with other interests; I'm trying to work on my book," said Pennell, who has been an alderwoman 4 years.
Two alderman-at-large positions now are up for re-election, and three candidates have filed: John Stauter, Christopher Schuchard and Javier Padilla.
Sterling Mayor Skip Lee said he will not appoint a candidate to the position, since the election is a little more than a month away.
Linda has lived in Sterling about 15 years, and lived in Rock Falls before that. She is the secretary for Golden Meals in Rock Falls. Her husband is a driver for Golden Meals.
"I learned a lot about our city that I didn't know before, some good, some bad," she said. "I learned that we have a really good council. We have an excellent city manager [Scott Shumard], he always took time for me, and so did our mayor, Skip Lee.
"I gleaned a lot from them concerning the city."
She has not ruled out running for office in Rock Falls in the future, she said.
