DIXON – The Sinnissippi Foundation and Sauk Valley Bank present the ninth annual Expressions Art Sale and Reception at The Next Picture Show, 113 W. First St.

The event is a fundraiser for Sinnissippi Centers, which provides mental health care and substance abuse treatment to people in Whiteside, Lee, Ogle, and Carroll counties.

Art and silent auction items go on display and up for sale April 9. The auction items will be available for bids during gallery hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, until the conclusion at the reception from 6 to 9 p.m. April 19 at the gallery.

The art also will available to buy at www.thenextpictureshow.com from April 9 through April 18. It will not be available online the day of the reception.

Nearly 30 local and regional artists will be donating their works to the fundraiser, including Les Allen, Ellen Allen, Kate Askegaard, Tim Drane, Beverly Garcia, James Hey, Charles Kerr, Phil Mattox, Debb Munson, Rick Munson, Ken Reif, Jerry L. Sheffler, and Tamara Shriver.

In addition, there will be an exhibit of photos by people in recovery from an alcohol or drug disorder. They won't be for sale.

Art and mental wellness have strong connections that go back to at least the 18th century, when art was used as part of formal treatment methods for people with a mental illness, and it’s still used therapeutically today.

That connection between artistic expression and mental wellness was part of the genesis of the first Expressions Art Sale and Reception in 2005, organizers say.

That said, the foundation will use the proceeds to fund its various programs, such as CARES, which provides emergency assistance to client families; the Client Fee Assistance Fund; which helps people receive behavioral health care; and the Holiday Food Basket Fund; which last year provided nearly 4 tons of food items during the holidays to Sinnissippi Centers’ client-families in need.
