Wrestling: Oregon's Sklavanitis wins title at Dakota
Brandon McCullough and Seth Montgomery each won their divisions on Saturday to lead the Erie-Prophetstown wrestling team to second place at the nine-team Sherrard Regional.
Mercer County won the team title with 205.5 points to advance to the Byron Team Sectional on Feb. 19. The Golden Eagles will take on Harvard, with the winner advancing to state.
Erie-Prophetstown (176), Sherrard (131), Morrison (96) and Riverdale (95) rounded out the top five.
McCullough was a 10-6 winner over Sherrard's Hunter Spengler in the 106-pound final, while Montgomery took a 4-3 decision over Mercer County's Devin Morford at 160 pounds.
Also for the Panthers, Josh Wheeler (132) and Jared Cole (138) were second, while Dylan Binion (152), Nick Williams (170) and Jonathan Butts (195) finished second. They will compete at the Oregon Sectional on Friday and Saturday.
Leading the way for Morrison was Calvin Harridge, who won a 14-4 major decision against Mercer County's Mason Weeks to win a title at 195 pounds.
Austin Keller (145), Nolan Dykema (152) and Austin Shoup (182) were each second and will also compete at the sectional.
Brandon Sklavanitis continued his banner season for Oregon, winning the 170-pound title at the Dakota Regional.
Sklavanitis (40-1) gained a 3-2 decision over Winnebago's Sean Ward. Also for Oregon, John Brink was second at 195 pounds. They each advance to the Oregon Sectional.
West Carroll was paced by Matt Ross, who was second at 160. Zach Hartman (132), Cody Yenney (152), Jacob Klein (182) and Brandon Anderson (220) were each third to punch their sectional tickets.
Dakota won the team title with 213 points and advances to the Byron Dual Team Sectional on Feb. 19. The Indians will take on Rock Falls, with the winner advancing to state.
Lena-Winslow (196), Stillman Valley (131), Byron (108) and West Carroll (93) rounded out the top five squads.
