Boys basketball: Hawks hold off Dukes
The Oregon Hawks used a third-quarter surge to take the lead, then held on as Dixon made a fourth-quarter run to beat the Dukes 49-46 Tuesday night at the Blackhawk Center.
Oregon (12-10) led 19-18 at halftime, then took a 36-29 lead into the fourth quarter. The Dukes (3-17) outscored the Hawks 17-13 over the final 8 minutes, but couldn't pull out the victory.
Caleb Mowry scored a game-high 22 points for Oregon, and former Duke Jessie McKinley Jr. added 11 points.
Matt Coffey and Cal Jarrett each scored 14 points for Dixon, with Coffey hitting four 3-pointers and Jarrett shooting 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Isaiah Roby grabbed eight rebounds, and Jarrett chipped in seven boards and five assists.
Rock Falls 51, Princeton 45: The Rockets led 18-9 after one quarter and kept the lead the rest of the way in a nonconference game at Tabor Gym.
Steven Armoska had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Rock Falls (17-5), and Jace Anderson hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Cole Evenson paced the Tigers with 19 points.
Morrison 59, Milledgeville 49: Alex Volckmann scored 23 points in Morrison to help the Mustangs break the Missiles three-game winning streak.
Brock Deter added 12 points, while Will Greul and Hunter Hamstra each had eight points for Morrison (4-22).
Caleb Skoog added 15 point for Milledgeville (7-12). Jordan Harris added 13.
River Ridge 66, Fulton 46: The Steamers were outscored 27-12 in the third period of a nonconference loss in Hanover.
Matt Dail scored 12 points on four 3-pointers to pace Fulton (5-20). Brendan Dauphin scored 22 to lead the Wildcats (9-6).
Eastland 58, Lena-Winslow 44: The Cougars led 29-14 by halftime and never looked back in a NUIC West win in Lanark.
Dalton Shaner led with 21 points for Eastland (19-3, 9-0). Ty Hartman added 12 points.
Tyler Walker had 11 points for Lena-Winslow (5-11, 2-5).
West Carroll 44, Stockton 42: The Thunder jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first half, but had to hold for a two-point victory in Mount Carroll.
Tommy Losch had 15 points for the Thunder (9-14, 3-4 NUIC West). Nick Hughes added eight for West Carroll, which led 30-20 after two quarters.
Trent Schubert had 15 points for Stockton (11-6, 3-3).
Faith Christian 46, East Moline Christian 39: The Falcons jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one quarter, then finally pulled away for the nonconference victory with a 10-4 edge in the fourth period.
Aaron Clardie led Faith (14-7) with 13 points ands seven rebounds, while Adam Dettman added 12 points and six steals, and Isaac Weber chipped in eight points.
Jared Wallace led East Moline Christian with 22 points.
Rock Island 145, Sterling 114, Newman 64: The Rocks won six individual events and all three relays to beat both the Golden Warriors and Comets in a triangular at the Duis Center.
Sterling got individual victories from Keaton Dir in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.24), Keanu Interone in the 100 breaststroke (59.18 seconds) and Cade Coursey in 1-meter diving (181.00 points). Dir (500 freestyle, 4:57.55) and Andrew Blackburn (100 freestyle, 55.70 seconds) took second in individual events, and Dir, Blackburn, Interone and Sam Wike teamed up for runner-up finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:45.06) and 400 freestyle relay (3:31.59).
Warren Melton led Newman with a pair of seconds, in the 200 freestyle (1:50.16) and the 100 butterfly (55.49). Alex DeForest was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (23.48), and Melton and DeForest teamed with Alvaro Martin and Robbie Hicks to take second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.65).
