Local roundup: Three Rockets score in double figures, key victory in Mendota
Three Rockets scored in double figures, leading the Rock Falls boys basketball team to a 68-60 Big Northern West victory Friday in Mendota.
Steven Armoska paced the triumvirate with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field. Alex Leaf added 15, Austin Babcock 10, and Daegan Wharff chipped in nine.
After leading 33-29 at the break, Rock Falls (16-5, 5-3) created some space with a 19-16 third-period advantage. Evan Carroll led Mendota (14-9, 2-6) with 17 points.
Riverdale 63, Erie 60: Jacob Johnston tossed in 29 points for the Cardinals, but missed the last 4 minutes of a loss in Port Byron with an injury.
Also for Erie (15-10, 6-4 Three Rivers), Connor Saad and Rhett Stover each had 10 points.
Jared Richmond poured in 31 points for Riverdale (12-10, 7-3).
Bureau Valley 44,
Morrison 34: The Storm finished strong to stave off a Three Rivers upset bid in Morrison.
Parker Neuhalfen hit two 3s and scored 13 points for Bureau Valley (17-10, 6-6), which led just 34-30 after three periods. Will Greul also connected twice from downtown and paced Morrison (3-22, 0-10) with eight points.
Conor Mooney added 10 points for BV, which shot 13-for-21 at the line. Morrison was 1-for-3.
Fulton 63, Amboy 38: The Steamers blew open a Three Rivers contest in Amboy in the second half.
Fulton (5-17, 2-6) led 26-22 at half before outscoring the Clippers 21-8 in the third period and 16-8 in the fourth.
Tyson Powers scored 16 points in the losing effort for Amboy (6-16, 2-9).
Matt Dail led Fulton with 14 points, and John Widener and Jake Willging added 10 apiece.
South Beloit 58: The Missiles won their third straight game, blowing by the SoBos in the fourth period of an NUIC East tilt in Milledgeville.
The Missiles (7-11, 3-5) outscored South Beloit 24-17 in the final frame, during which Kaleb Ebersole scored nine of his game-high 23 points. Jordan Harris chipped in seven of his 20 in the fourth and grabbed six rebounds.
Edgar Robles led South Beloit (4-11, 4-4) with 14 points. The physical game featured 40 total fouls, 23 called on the Missiles.
Polo 82, Orangeville 48: The Marcos scored at a torrid clip to open both halves of an NUIC East contest on their home floor.
Polo (14-5, 7-2) scored 33 points in the first period and 26 in the third. Orangeville actually enjoyed a 17-8 advantage in the fourth period.
Brady Bushman scored 18 points for the Marcos, while AJ Dollmeyer chipped in 17 points and nine rebounds, and Brian Cavanaugh added 10 points, six boards and eight assists. Ten Marcos scored.
Warren 36, West Carroll
35: Jason Heller hit a 3-pointer and all eight of his free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as the Warriors rallied past the Thunder in Savanna.
Warren (8-15, 2-4 NUIC West) trailed 25-21 entering the final quarter.
Trevor Jones led West Carroll (8-14, 2-4) with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Panthers take two: Erie-Prophetstown won a pair of duals in Ashton, 72-6 over the host Raiders and 55-15 over West Carroll.
Leading the way for AFC was Anthony Hahn (22-5), a double winner at 113 pounds, including a 9-2 decision over E-P’s Brandon McCullough (28-2).
