Two charged with stealing scrap
STERLING – Two longtime felons are back behind bars on charges of stealing scrap metal from a Galt business and later selling it for cash.
Terry G. Gibbs, 35, of Rock Falls, and Steven K. Argraves, 40, of Sterling, were arrested on charges of burglary. They have a preliminary hearing Thursday.
Bond was set at $75,000 for Gibbs and $100,000 for Argraves.
Gibbs also was charged with theft.
Whiteside County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a burglary early Wednesday at Rock River Lumber and Grain, where motors and copper were taken, Detective Rob Luyando said.
The next day, the owner of the business noticed the items at Cimco Recycling, located nearby, Luyando said.
Luyando said that anytime someone sells copper products to Cimco, employees are required to take down the license plate of the vehicle and see the seller’s driver’s license.
Employees also must document every person inside the vehicle when more than 50 pounds are sold, he said.
Luyando said the pair received about $600 for the items.
Both have multiple convictions for burglary and theft in Whiteside County.
