Comets take control after half against Amboy; Rockford Lutheran routs Oregon in BNC West game

A.J. Sharp got hot from 3-point range to lift Newman to a 65-31 victory at Amboy in Three Rivers Conference action Tuesday.

The Comets (14-3, 6-1) led just 20-18 at halftime, then Sharp dropped in six 3-pointers as Newman seized a commanding 48-26 lead heading into the final quarter. Sharp finished with 18 points, while Noah McCarty added 10.

Damon Quest paced Amboy (6-12, 2-6) with 11 points.

Lutheran 85, Oregon 49: The Hawks lost a Big Northern West game at the Blackhawk Center, as the Crusaders scored at least 19 points in every quarter and hit all 12 of their free-throw attempts.

Caleb Mowry scored 19 points for Oregon (10-8, 1-5), and Jessie McKinley Jr, added eight. Thomas Kopelman had 22 points, and Tarence Roby added 20 for Lutheran (14-2, 5-0).

Kewanee 67, Erie 62, OT: The Cardinals pushed the Three Rivers-leading Boilermakers to the brink, but couldn’t pull off the victory at home.

Jacob Johnston hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points for Erie (12-8, 4-3), which led 31-24 at halftime before falling behind 41-40 after three quarters. Connor Saad hit three 3s and added 13 points.

Donovan Oliver scored 20 points for Kewanee (16-2, 8-0).

Riverdale 60, Morrison 37: The Mustangs were outscored 37-16 in the second and third quarters of a Three Rivers road loss.

Hunter Hamstra scored nine points, Matt Wilkens had eight, and Bill Lee Greul added seven for Morrison (3-18, 0-7). Cole Solomon (13 points) and Jared Richmond (10 points) paced the Rams (10-9, 5-2).

Bureau Valley 60, Prophetstown 43: The Storm (15-9, 4-5) sent the Prophets (9-10, 3-4) to a Three Rivers loss in Manlius.

Forreston 57, AFC 46: Bret Gittleson scored 19 points for the Raiders (5-8, 1-4 NUIC East) in a home loss to the Cardinals.

Robert DeVries led Forreston (5-10, 3-4) with 17 points.

Faith Christian 51, Tri-State 25: Adam Dettman’s 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists helped propel the Falcons to an Northern Illinois Christian Conference win at home.

Isaac Weber added nine points and 10 rebounds for Faith (11-5, 3-3), which led 18-0 after one quarter and 27-3 at halftime. Aaron Clardie scored eight points and Blake Hudson chipped in seven for the Falcons.

Men’s basketball

Carl Sandburg 77, Sauk Valley 65: Daven Ottley scored 24 points for the Skyhawks (11-6, 1-1 Arrowhead), who squandered a 31-28 halftime lead in Galesburg.

Aaron Powers led Sandburg (11-5, 2-1) with 20 points.
