German Valley man dies after falling through ice

SABULA, Iowa – A German Valley man is dead and his teenage son injured after falling through the ice on an eastern Iowa lake.

Ronald Kerkhoff, 65, and his son, Jacob Kerkhoff, 18, were ice fishing on South Sabula Lake at Sabula when they fell through just before 5 p.m. Friday, Jackson County Sheriff’s officials said.

Rescue crews pulled them from the lake and took them to Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, where Ronald Kerkhoff died. Jacob Kerkhoff was treated for his injuries and released.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport.
