Ice builds up at the bottom of the dam Friday in Dixon. Frigid temps and relentless snow continued to plague the Sauk Valley Friday, where wind chills plunged to 30 below zero, closing schools and canceling after-school sports and other activities. This is just a chilling preview of next week, which could bring more than a half-foot of snow and the potential for the "coldest stretch in years," the National Weather Service warns. From the folks at AccuWeather: "Ahead of the harshest cold yet this season, a storm will lay a swath of snow, slippery travel and disruptions to daily routines across the midwestern United States beginning on Sunday. Areas of snow and slick travel can dot the region prior to the early week storm as bitterly cold air remains in place. Highs will generally remain 10-25 degrees below normal, in the single digits and teens, through the weekend."
