Employees at the east-end Shell station in Sterling are going to heroic efforts to help a “super snowman” and his family with mounting medical bills. Station manager Sheila Bittner of Rock Falls and her friend and co-worker, Natasha Fargher, started a fundraiser at the station at 2412 E. Lincolnway for Caleb Clausen of Walnut and his family after learning about their plight. Caleb, 6, was severely injured Sept. 19 when he was struck by a semitrailer while riding an electric mini-bike. He’s undergone 10 surgeries and is now in rehab in Chicago. Bittner has never met Caleb, but his story touched her heart, so she spearheaded a fundraiser at the station. So far, the campaign has raised about thousand dollars. The money will go toward medical expenses, rehabilitation, and modifications needed to the family home for Caleb’s recovery. If you can't make it to the Shell station, a separate fundriaser – this through YouCaring – has been set up at shawurl.com/371f.
