Rock Falls’ Blair out-duels Oswalt

Rock Falls graduate and Springfield Cardinals right-hander Seth Blair out-dueled longtime big-leaguer Roy Oswalt on Sunday for a 3-0 win over the Tulsa Drillers in Tulsa, Okla.

The seven innings were a season high for Blair, who struck out seven for the Cardinals. He retired 13 consecutive batters from midway through the third to midway through the seventh.

Ottawa grad, Illini commit to join Angels

Illinois football signee and Ottawa High School graduate Michael Hermosillo opted out of his plans to play for the Illini after he was selected by the Angels in Saturday’s MLB draft. He was taken in the 28th round with the 847th overall pick.

Hermosillo, a running back, was a three-star football recruit and first-team all-state pick. As a centerfielder, he was named Northern Illinois Big 12 player of the Year in the spring after batting .485 with a .587 on-base percentage, .912 slugging percentage, four home runs, 30 RBIs and 36 runs scored.

Bears trade Carimi to Buccaneers

The Bears traded offensive lineman Gabe Carimi to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday. It was not immediately known what the Bears received in return for Carimi, a first-round pick in 2011.

The deal, of course, is contingent on Carimi passing a physical with the Buccaneers. A source said Carimi was set to travel to Tampa Bay on Monday.

Illini transfer tweets DePaul commitment

Former Illinois wing Myke Henry tweeted about where he might land.

“DePaul here I come!!” he wrote late Saturday night.

Henry played 10.6 minutes per game as a sophomore at Illinois, averaging 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He was a top-100 recruit out of Orr High in Chicago.

Protestors interrupt French Open final

Open organizers defended their security arrangements after protesters, one letting off a flare and running on court, briefly interrupted the final between Rafael Nadal and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer on Sunday.

Twelve people were being questioned after the showpiece match was disrupted and protests broke out elsewhere at Roland Garros in Paris.

One protester, wearing a white face mask, let off a flare and ran onto the court towards Nadal.

Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix handily

Three-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel improved his chances at a fourth straight season title Sunday by win the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

It was Vettel’s first victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Vettel’s Red Bull left from pole position and led almost the entire way to finish 14.4 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari.
