STERLING – A 21-year-old Sterling man was being held in the Whiteside County Jail Monday, in connection with several car break-ins believed to have occurred on Friday.

Joseph J. Higley is charged with three counts of burglary and obstructing a peace officer.

Bond had not been set as of Monday morning.

Police responded to a suspicious person call around 1:11 a.m. Saturday in the area of Third Avenue and East Ninth Street, according to a press release. Higley, who was in the area at that time and was identified as a possible suspect, was talking to police when he fled on foot, according to the release.

He was captured a short time later. While searching Higley, police found numerous items that later were determined to be from several car burglaries that took place near the 900 block of Third Avenue.

Some of the items have not yet been identified by the victims. Anyone who may have been a victim of one of the burglaries is asked to call the Sterling Police Department at 815-632-6640.
