JOLIET – Murder defendant Nicholas T. Sheley is headed for hard time.

The accused spree killer, sentenced last month to 7 years in prison for aggravated battery, has been moved from the Knox County jail to Stateville Correctional Center.

Sheley, 30, of Sterling, was taken Friday to the maximum-security prison, which holds more than 3,300 inmates.

Stateville houses the Northern Reception and Classification Center, which is the state’s major  intake and processing unit for adult male inmates, according to the Illinois Department of Correction’s Web site.

It wasn’t known Wed-nesday whether he’ll remain at Stateville or simply be processed there. IDOC  spokeswoman Januari Smith was unavailable for comment because of the Veterans Day holiday.

In September, a Knox County jury found Sheley guilty of attacking guards at the county jail in April.

He was in the jail awaiting trial in the death of Ronald Randall, 65, of Galesburg.

Sheley also is charged with seven other homicides, all committed in June 2008.
