STERLING – William N. Appenzeller, 82, of Sterling, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at CGH Medical Center.

He was born June 1, 1927, in Sterling, the son of John Harold and Helen Elizabeth (Howard) Appenzeller. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the Marine Corps. He graduated from the former DeForrest Technical College (now DeVry) in Chicago. Mr. Appenzeller was the proprietor of Appenzeller’s TV in Sterling for nearly 50 years, and was a volunteer instructor in electronics at Whiteside Area Vocational Center in Sterling. He married Marilaine Anning on Sept. 16, 1950, in Sterling. She died Aug. 30, 2009. He was a member of Sterling American Legion Post 296.

Surviving are his children, Billie Kay (John) Rawot, Thomas J. Appenzeller, Linda Rae Whitver, and Richard Paul Appenzeller; one son-in-law, Albert Latch of Kooskia, Idaho; one brother, James (Beverly) Appenzeller of Doylestown, Pa.; two sisters, Betty Ward and Patricia (Frank) Fisher, both of Rock Falls; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his daughter, Diana Mae Latch; his parents; and three brothers, Jack, Robert, and Richard Appenzeller.

Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at McDonald-Allen-Grennan Funeral Home, 505 First Ave., Sterling. Burial with military honors will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name to the Sterling American Legion Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
