ROCK FALLS – David Neal “Poorboy” Willis, of Rock Falls, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in his home, after a long illness.

David was born Jan. 6, 1943, in Sterling, the son of Dorothy (Walter) Klies and Babe Willis. He married the love of his life, Joan Lorraine Roberts, on Nov. 1, 1966, at First Baptist Church, Sterling.

David served as a medic with the 25th Infantry in the Army, stationed in Hawaii and Thailand, from 1961-1964. He earned his degree in electronics at DeVry Institute of Technology. He had several businesses in electronics (TV, radio) repair, and medical equipment (home safety and service company).

He retired after 23 years, from Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. He was a member of the American Legion Post and North American Fishing Club.

In his younger days, Dave loved to ride the open road on his Harley, and enjoyed his many fishing trips to Wisconsin and down on the lower dam in Rock Falls. Even after he didn’t have the energy to fish anymore, he liked to sit in his truck with his coffee and overlook the river. Those who knew Dave, even those who didn’t, always enjoyed hearing his many jokes. He was never one to complain, even up to the end, always had an upbeat attitude and something funny to say. David loved playing cards, doing yard work, and playing with his little dog, “Pepper.” He was a great adviser, storyteller, and friend, and enjoyed bonding with his grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Willis of Rock Falls, two daughters; Tracy Willis and Jamie (Antonio) Lerma, both of Rock Falls; two grandsons; Dominick and Sabastian Lerma of Rock Falls; one sister, Carol (Ed) Haschak of Sterling; one brother, Tom (Laura) Root of Princeton; and his best buddies, Jack Roberts of Rochelle and Richard Finnicum of Sterling.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service to honor Dave will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, with Pastor Brian Vickers officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
