Thanks for aiding detector programBy Mark Callison and Mike Wilcox, DixonAs part of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11, the Dixon City Fire Department, along with the Dixon Firefighters Charitable Association, conducted our third annual Smoke Detector Program. Smoke detectors are a very inexpensive form of life insurance. Early detection is the key to surviving if a fire were to strike your home. Our firefighters followed a pizza delivery person from six local pizza restaurants throughout the week to 39 houses in Dixon. From the information we gathered, there is plenty of room for improvement. Of the 39 houses, five did not want to participate. Of the remaining 34 houses, 26 (76 percent) had working detectors on each floor. Last year, we had 55 percent of households with working detectors on each floor. We were glad to see the improvement, but would like to see 100 percent. Three smoke detectors were given away along with 20 batteries. Of the 39 households, 30 were aware of the promotion, which was advertised by Sauk Valley Newspapers, WIXN and WLLT. Amcore Bank also advertised on their marquee signs. The detectors were donated by the Dixon Firefighters Charitable Association. The batteries for smoke detectors were donated by Spectrum Brand/Rayovac and are still available through November at both the Dixon City and Dixon Rural Fire Stations. Bring in your old 9V batteries, and we will replace them at no cost. On behalf of the Dixon Fire Department and Firefighters Charitable Association, we would like to thank the following restaurants: Al & Leda’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Mama Cimino’s, Maria’s and Lil Angelo’s. We would also like to thank Sauk Valley Newspapers, River Country/WIXN, WLLT and Amcore Bank for advertising the promotion. Thanks to Chief Tim Shipman and the firefighters for helping run the program. This was the third year for the program, and we plan on running it again next year. We would like to remind everyone to check their detectors – if they haven’t already – and stay safe. Note to readers – Mark Callison and Mike Wilcox are captains with the Dixon City Fire Department.
