Speed limit remains unchanged; VITAL coordinator resigns at Sauk Valley

DIXON – The Illinois Department of Transportation doesn’t plan to lower the speed limit on state Route 2 in front of Sauk Valley Community College.

College President George Mihel told the board of trustees Monday night that he had asked IDOT officials to decrease the 65 mph speed limit, but was told it would be pointless: People would ignore it.

Mihel said he won’t stop asking.

“I travel that highway and stop at that intersection frequently,” he said. “I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve see cars blow that stoplight at 70 miles per hour. And there have been accidents there, including one fatal accident not that long ago.”

In other matters, the board:

■  Accepted Tim Benedict’s resignation. Benedict is the coordinator of Project VITAL, Volunteers in Teaching Adult Literacy, and is quitting to continue his own education.

“We don’t usually announce these kinds of resignations, but Tim has done a tremendous job,” Mihel said. “We wish him well, and we will miss him.”

■  Heard from student representative to the board of trustees Emilio Fischer that the student government wants to make Sauk a completely smoke-free campus. But most of the students questioned about the issue – both smokers and non-smokers – oppose the idea, Fischer said.

■  Learned the aging Mathis Theater needs $20,000 to $30,000 in lighting and sound upgrades. The lights last were updated in 1999, Mathis Theater Director Jason Hedrick said.
