OREGON – Forreston Village President and veteran Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Harn wants his boss’ job.

Harn plans to run against incumbent Sheriff Greg Beitel in the Feb. 2 primary, he said Monday.

Beitel announced his bid for re-election on Oct. 5.

“It’s extremely important that we’re fiscally responsible. I’m the person who can do that,” Harn told a group of 20 supporters who gathered in the lobby of the Ogle County Judicial Center.

Harn, 48, said he plans to reorganize the sheriff’s department staff, reduce spending and increase positive interaction with residents of the county.

He said that he favors reinstating the DARE program, which was eliminated earlier this year because of budget constraints, and that he hopes to establish Neighborhood Watch programs in every community.

Harn has been a deputy with the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department for more than 24 years.

He was elected village president in 2004 and 2008.
