Tennis: Close matches highlight Day 2 of Emma Hubbs Classic

A highly-competitive 15 and under girls singles bracket highlighted the play Tuesday at the 19th annual Emma Hubbs Tennis Classic in Dixon.

Mandy Kent won 42 games to take the top spot in the seven-girl round robin division, while Kayla Wilson was second (33 games). Molly Ginn (27), Hayley Kent (25), Mary Alice Oswalt (21), Kacie Dillow (15) and Mackenzie Wolfley (6) also played.

The 15 and under boys singles was also close, as Joey Hammitt won 20 games to edge out Brendan O'Rorke (19 games) in the five-player round robin format. Kurt Gale (17), Dominic Baratta (13) and Eric Ardis (11) also competed.

The 18 and under boys doubles division was also a tight race, with P.J. Ginn & Caleb Bradley teaming up to win 19 games in the four-team round robin bracket. Alex Knack & Peter Balser were a close second with 17 games won, and Grant Tefiku and Brandon Eisele were right on their tails with 16 games won. Anthony Petrasko and Brandon Neisewander (8 games) also played.

The 11 and under boys singles division was played in bracket format, with Sam Bratt defeating K.C. Knack 6-3 in the championship match. Michael Gale beat Mason Moeller 6-0 for third place, while Patrick Johnson was a 6-0 winner over Jacob Harrison in the fifth-place match. Ian Keene and Luke Poteat also competed.

Katie Hammitt won the girls 11 and under round robin division, winning 23 games. Erin Vits won 18, Alane Bratt won 11 and Rose Hellyer won eight. Lily Hellyer also played.

In the two-team 13 and under mixed doubles division, Annie Vits & Justin Wilson defeated Erin Vits & John Brechon 8-2.

The tournament, sponsored by All Safe Storage and Timber Creek Golf, continues through the end of the week. Today's play includes 11 & under boys and girls doubles, 13 & under boys and girls singles, 15 & under mixed doubles and 18 & under girls doubles.
