Illinois police promise holiday DUI patrols

By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois State Police say they'll increase drunken driving patrols across the state over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

State police and other law enforcement agencies promise increased late-night roadside safety checks, impaired driving patrols and safety belt enforcement zones. They're calling the effort, "You Drink&Drive, You Lose."

Police cite data they say show many fatal traffic accidents occur late at night and a high percentage involve alcohol and motorists who aren't wearing seat belts.

The crackdown runs through Sunday.
