Reagan Run is one in 1,175
DIXON – The folks planning the 10th Reagan Run had set the goal of trying to attract 1,000 runners for Saturday’s race.
They met that goal and then some.
Shortly after the start of the race, it was announced that 1,175 runners had been given numbers to run. That’s as high as they could go because they had no more numbers to give out. Only 1,102 finished the race before timing was stopped.
“It’s amazing every year how they put this together,” Anthony Welty said. “To have 1,000 runners is just great for the whole community.”
Welty was wearing No. 1.
The extra numbers meant a few new obstacles to clear up in the future.
“When you get this many people in such a tight place, it’s gets pretty tough,” overall winner Bryan Glass said. “When I came back around I was meeting runners going the opposite direction. I was able to dodge them, it’s just something that’ll have to be planned for in the future.”
Clipping the field: Anthony Welty didn’t win his fourth Reagan Run. He had to settle for runner-up, but that wasn’t the case in the corporate challenge.
Welty was the captain of the group from Wahl Clipper that finished with a total of 47 points. That topped the perennial favorites from Raynor Garage Doors, which finished at 56.
“This really tops anything that I could have done as an individual,” Welty said. “We came so close to winning last year that I know a lot of these guys worked hard to come out and do better. It’s awesome that we were able to win this.”
Also scoring points for Wahl were Darrell Wallace, Tom McDonald, Nathan Castillo and Marvin Stern.
Do It Best Corporation was third at 87, with Borg Warner in fourth at 123. Overall there were 15 businesses and organizations in the corporate challenge.
Back on track: Matt Logan didn’t end his high school running career quite as he would have liked.
Logan, who graduated in May, missed the final month of the track season with a stress fracture in his talus, the bone which makes up the lower part of the ankle joint. Logan, who was a big part of Dixon’s 2008 state championship team in cross country, admitted the injury had him down.
“I was kind of depressed about that for awhile,” said Logan, who got back in gear by competing in the Reagan Run. “But now I am back at it again and I’ll be going to a camp in August where there will be some big-time runners. That’s got me back in the swing of things.”
Logan finished 17th in 18 minutes, 24 seconds. He recently got back to training to get ready for college; he’ll be running cross country and track at DePaul University starting in the fall.
“I’ve been training with Kel Bond and Welty to help me get some of this fat off,” Logan said.
