Metropolis development stalled by recession
METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) — A planned riverfront development in Superman's adoptive home of Metropolis is being foiled by the recession.
Leaders of the tourist town along the Ohio River in far southern Illinois say the multi-million-dollar project calling for a hotel, marina and retail shops is on hold until the economy rebounds.
Mayor Billy McDaniel says a lot of the city's revenue comes from the local Harrah's Casino, which he says is $300,000 to $400,000 a month shy of what it had been making.
McDaniel says that when the economy steadies itself, the first thing likely to be developed will be a concert venue.
