Hazel Massey

WESTLAKE, Ohio – Hazel B. Massey, 96, of Rae Ann Suburban Nursing Home, Westlake, Ohio, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at the nursing home. She and her husband farmed in the Dixon, Lee Center, and Franklin Grove areas, retiring in 1979. In addition, Hazel taught school for 37 years in Dundee, Dixon, and Rochelle.

Hazel was born Sept. 1, 1912, in Dundee, the daughter of James C. and Elizabeth (Miller) Binnie. She was a 1930 graduate of Dundee Hills High School and a 1936 graduate of Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College (Northern Illinois University). Hazel married Gilbert C. Massey on Dec. 21, 1952. He preceded her in death. She was a member of Dundee and Prophetstown Congregational churches. Hazel was an active member of Eastern Star and Delta Kappa Gamma, and attended retired teachers and church organizations. She enjoyed needlework, gardening, and bird-watching.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Massey-Holstein; and four nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by one brother, Clair Binnie.

Graveside service is at East Dundee Cemetery. Arrangements were completed by Jenkins Funeral Chapel, Westlake, Ohio.
